Who are we?

AGORA is not-for-profit grassroot public health organisation.  The AGORA Association is an association recognized by the Senegalese Minister of the Interior. The organization is apolitical and non-religious and aims to improve the health of Senegalese communities through the implementation of grass-rooted public health programs. The AGORA Association works in all areas of public health in Senegal and Africa, even in the most remote areas and with priority given to chronic diseases and women and children. To support sustainable change in public health, the AGORA Association is always working to develop cost-effective programs that are needed in the context of resource scarcity in Senegal. At the AGORA Association, we always work in collaboration with the populations and focus our programs on cost-effective models. The AGORA Association is based in Saint-Louis in the northern part of Senegal.

Our mission

The AGORA Association is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious humanitarian association.

Its purpose is to put the skills of its members at the service of the most disadvantaged to facilitate access to health services and improve healthy behaviours. It implements long-term projects in the context of integrated development taking into account the public health needs expressed by local populations.

Our approach

The AGORA Association bases its programs on a participatory approach where the involvement of local communities is essential. Projects are developed taking into account the needs, expectations and cultural specificities of the beneficiaries. Our actions are based on the participation of local actors, communities and local authorities. Their involvement in the development and implementation of programs is essential to ensure their sustainability.

Our priority areas

Women and children HealtH

Combating maternal and neonatal mortality should now be regarded as a vital social and economic investment, so that pregnancy is a safe and happy event for all women and their families. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 350,000 women die each year from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth and nearly four million newborns died within 28 days of their birth. The vast majority of maternal deaths occur in the poorest regions of the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The risk of death of a woman during her life following a pregnancy is 1 in 16 in sub-Saharan Africa as against 1 in 7300 in the industrialized countries. Similarly, the African continent has the highest infant mortality rates in the world, the main causes being malaria, water-borne diseases, respiratory infections and malnutrition, despite we know how to prevent and treat these ailments. Deeply concerned about maternal, neonatal and child morbidity and mortality, which persist at high levels in Senegal and Africa, the AGORA Association is committed to participating in national and international efforts to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality To contribute to the fight against poverty.

The AGORA Association is committed to: Improving access to reproductive health for disadvantaged people, raising awareness about sexual and reproductive health, family planning activities, pre and postnatal monitoring of pregnant women, vaccination campaigns, prevention and Treatment of infectious diseases, awareness of healthy nutrition ...

Chronic diseases

Non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, are responsible for 30 percent of all deaths in Senegal, and cancer alone kills more Senegalese than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined. Moreover, the prevalence of non-communicable illnesses in Senegal, as in Africa as a whole, is projected to increase significantly in the coming decades, due to life-style changes and population aging.

Yet, Senegal’s health system has traditionally focused primarily on acute health problems, with limited funds dedicated to chronic and non-communicable illness. Diagnosis is often made late, treatment options are limited, and medical care is costly. A large percentage of patients with chronic, life-threatening illnesses develop pain and other debilitating symptoms. Research shows that as many as 80 percent of patients with advanced cancer, and about 50 percent of those with AIDS, develop moderate to severe pain. The difficulties in providing curative care make palliative care and pain relief especially critical.

The AGORA Association focuses its intervention on a comprehensive approach including all the axes necessary to the implementation of prevention and quality management of chronic diseases. This innovative approach is realized in practice by the development of 5 components that propose:

1. Focus on primary prevention to reduce the human and economic burden of chronic disease progression,

2. Develop secondary and tertiary prevention through education to reduce the burden of complications from chronic diseases,

3. Investing in research - action to develop innovative approaches

4. Promote the reduction of costs of care and decentralization for the geographical accessibility of populations to quality care,

5. Better access to palliative care,

6. Invest in an integrated approach that involves active participation of patients and their families through their associations by promoting self-management and advocacy mechanisms that enable them to defend their rights.

health promotion

Beyond the programs carried out in the field with the local communities, the AGORA Association conducts information, health promotion and mobilization campaigns. The AGORA Association adopts a comprehensive, culturally appropriate approach aimed at changing behavior as well as environments related to health. Our approach is to inform as many people as possible about major public health issues and to promote, through targeted communication to priority audiences, behaviors that are decisive for health.

Focus on high quality research

The AGORA Association has made a firm commitment to conduct quality public health research in Senegal. We set out clearly defined and articulated perspectives and collaboration framework for research and partnership with major universities, research centres, local researchers, healthcare institutions and the community. Scientific research makes a very important contribution to our efforts to improve the health of communities and combat disease. Research contributes to the emergence of new knowledge and the development of better tools for exploiting existing knowledge.

At the AGORA Association, it is firmly believed that the synergy of epidemiology and the human sciences to explore not only the health status but also the representations, the share of health in the expression of cultures, the weight of the organization Social role, the role of affectivity and family structures.
